In an effort to educate students about the fire and health hazards of smoking-related materials,
the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) program was established in
Fiscal Year 1996. The program's mission is to provide students with the knowledge base to recognize
the dangers of fire, specifically, the fire hazards that smoking-related materials pose. S.A.F.E. uses
specially trained firefighters to teach fire and life safety education. Many of the firefighters are
trained emergency medical technicians who have seen the insidious health effects of smoking-induced
illnesses.
The S.A.F.E. educator serves as a role model for impressionable youth while providing students with
firsthand knowledge of the dangers associated with fire, smoking-related materials, and the
debilitating health effects of smoking-induced illnesses. The educator plays a significant role with
regards to the prevention of fire through such efforts as: broadening public awareness of fire
hazards, and the enforcement of state laws including those that regulate the use, sale, and storage of
smoking-related materials.
S.A.F.E. also seeks to reduce tobacco consumption by educating communities about the fire and health
hazards of smoking-related materials.
