Propane Tank Overfill Protection Device (OPD)

NOTE:  The new OPD valves on propane tanks from 4lbs to 40lbs will not dispense propane, unless there is a pressure release gas line connected to it.

An Overfilling Prevention Device (OPD) is a safety shutoff device incorporated into the filling valve of a propane cylinder (i.e., those used on gas grills, RVs, etc.). Overfilling a propane cylinder can result in propane release, fire, and possibly injury.

Facts & Figures

  • OPD’s were required in the 1998 edition of NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code. The 2001 edition modified requirements to exempt horizontal cylinders manufactured before October 1, 1998. Also exempts are cylinders used for industrial trucks, industrial welding and cutting gases (these cylinders must be labeled with their use).

  • OPD’s are required on all propane cylinders between 4 pounds and 40 pounds propane capacity. A common gas grill cylinder holds about 20 pounds of propane.

  • All cylinders manufactured after September 30, 1998, were required to have an OPD.

  • Cylinders not equipped with an OPD can be filled until April 1, 2002, or until they are re-qualified (inspected and verified safe for continued service). Re-qualification is required by the U. S. Department of Transportation for all cylinders 12 years after the date of manufacture, and five years after the last re-qualification. The date of manufacture is stamped on the cylinder collar. When re-qualified, the re-qualification date is stamped on the cylinder collar near the date of manufacture with an "E" after the date.

  • Many propane dealers will re-qualify cylinders, replacing the valve with a new one incorporating an OPD. As there is a charge for re-qualification, it may be more economical to replace the entire cylinder, especially if it is rusty. Dispose of propane cylinders safely. Your local fire departments or propane refiller should answer questions about safe disposal.
