Rules & Regulations for the Town of Plainville

Sprinkler and Standpipe Systems
Section Description
6- 1
All sprinkler risers shall have a low pressure switch installed on the street side of the check valve, located so that a sixty (60) percent drop in pressure at ant location in the system causes an alarm activation.

All sprinkler systems shall have a direct fire alarm connection by master box to the Plainville Fire Department.

All wet sprinkler risers shall have water flow alarm devices installed.
6- 4
All vane flow switches shall have a zero (0) to sixty (60) second retard devices and will be set for forty-five (45) seconds.

Tamper switches are required on all sprinkler shut off devices and they shall be wired to a stand-alone fire zone. They shall alarm the fire alarm control panel and trip the master box.

Each floor of a building will be zoned separately with an approved inspectors test on each zone. All inspectors test must meet the National Fire Protection Association #13 approval methods and approval of the Chief of Fire Operations of the Plainville Fire Department or his/her designee.

All sprinkler inspections shall conform to National Fire Protection Association #13 and this regulation.

All devices shall be U.L. listed or F.M. approved for the function they are designed to perform.

A legend shall be placed at the main shut-off valve indicating the location of shut-off valves and inspection test valves.

All valves in the sprinkler system shall have permanent tags indicating their purpose.

In addition to the sprinkler/standpipe riser flow switches, flow switches shall be installed on each zone. Sprinklers shall be zoned as per fire alarm zones. Any alarms originating from a sprinkler head or a standpipe cabinet, shall provide two indications on the system annunciator; one to indicate which sprinkler or standpipe riser is flowing, and one to indicate the zone where the alarm is occuring.

Inspection test discharge will be the same size orifice in diameter as the smallest sprinkler head discharge orifice.

All buildings with a sprinkler or standpipe system shall have a fire alarm system tied into the municipal fire alarm system.
6-14
All sprinkler/standpipe systems shall have a fire department connection with a minimum of two 2-1/2 inch connections. Connections must be a minimum of thirty-six (36) inches from all obstructions.

All buildings shall have one hundred percent (100%) protection. All areas shall be sprinkled to include all bathrooms and closets. All sprinkler heads installed in electric rooms shall be 212 degree rated.
6-16
Wet or dry sprinkler systems shall be provided with the following:
6-16.1
Excess pressure pump as per U.L. listed VJCR.
6-16.2
Mechanical water motor gong.
6-16.3
Supervised shut-offs of all water supply.
6-16.4
Supervising circuits must be independent of alarm circuits and have audible device in a common area.

All installations shall be in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association #13 series and all applicable state and local codes.

A set of hydraulic calculations and floor plans shall be submitted to the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his/her designee prior to the installation of a sprinkler/standpipe system.

All prints shall have the name and license number of approved sprinkler installer.
6-20
If fire suppression control valves are located in a separate room or concealed space, a sign shall be provided on the entrance door. The lettering for such sign shall be red with white letters and at least four (4) inches in height and shall read "Sprinkler Control Valve Room" or "Standpipe Control Valve Room."

All standpipe systems shall be installed to a minimum of five hundred (500) gallons per minute for the first standpipe plus two hundred and fifty (250) gallons per minute for each additional standpipe.
6-22
Standpipes shall have sixty-five (65) pounds per square inch residual pressure at the top with five hundred (500) gallons per minute.
6-23
All hose outlets shall have a two and a half (2-1/2) inch by one and a half (1-1/2) inch reducer with cap and chain.
6-24
When required the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his/her designee the following hose and nozzle specifications must be met.
6-24.1
Hose: All synthetic jacket, F.M. approved, all synthetic rubber lined, test pressured for five hundred (500) pounds per square inch, service test at two-hundred and fifty (250) pounds per square inch, test pressure and Plainville Fire Department name stenciled on same. Hose to be in fifty (50)foot lengths.
6-24.2
Nozzles: One and a half (1-1/2) inch nozzle, ninety-five (95) gallon per minute standard, twist shut-off, combination fog and straight stream, chrome plated finish or polycarbonate, U.L. listed and F.M. approved.
6-25
All fire pumps shall be installed to a minimum of the National Fire Protection Association #20.
6-26
A test header shall be provided with all fire pumps outside of the building or at the Chief of Fire Operations discretion or his/her designees discretion.
6-27
If a fire pump is used, it's operation shall be indicated on the fire alarm control panel and annunciator panel.
6-28
A fire pump may be waived by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department.
