Rules & Regulations for the Town of Plainville

Direct Connection to Fire Department
Section Description
3- 1
The master fire alarm box shall be a type approved by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee and will be the method of choice for automatic connection to the Plainville Fire Department.

Master boxes shall be installed at a location determined by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee.
3- 3
Master boxes shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 1221.
3- 4
All master boxes shall be radio transmitter type.
3- 5
The radio master fire alarm box connected to the fire protection system must be compatible with the receiving equipment manufactured by Signal Communications Inc., Woburn, Massachusetts.
3- 5.1
The master box shall be mounted on the inside of the building at the main entrance, next to the fire alarm control panel.
3- 5.2
The base of the master box shall be moounted four (4) feet from the finished floor. The top of the fire alarm control panel shall not be any higher than seventy-two (72) inches from the finished floor.
3- 5.3
The antenna for the radio master box must be mounted to the exterior of the building near the entrance where the master box is located. This location shall be pre-approved by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee. The antenna cable shall be installed in three quarter (3/4) inch i.d. P.V.C. piping. All bends in the piping shall be made with LB connectors. Sweeps will be allowed if one (1) inch P.V.C. is used. All connections shall be made water tight.
3- 5.4
The cable connecting the antenna to the master box shall be RG-213 coax cable with PL-259 connectors. The cable shall be brought to the Fire Department and one (1) connector will be installed by the Fire Alarm Division before the cable is placed in the P.V.C. piping.

All exterior master boxes shall have a red indicator lamp over the box. Indicator lamp to be on its own power supply.

All master boxes will be covered by the installer during construction to prevent accidental use when not tied into the municipal system, and will remain covered until installation is approved by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee.

Master box code wheel information will be given to the installer after plan approval and permit application has been filed with the Fire Department.

A number eight (#8) guage solid "green" insulated ground wire will be run in conduit from the master box to an eight (8) foot ground rod that is inserted into the ground. Ground wire will be tagged "Fire Department Connection - Do Not Remove."

Absolutely no connections will be made to the municipal fire alarm except by Plainville Fire Department alarm personnel.

All work on the system side of the master box shall be the responsibility of the installer.

Reconditioned or used master boxes are not allowed. Only new master boxes are accepted, on request, proof of newness must be presented to the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee.

All joints, connections, heat detectors and smoke detectors will be installed in junction boxes. All joint and connection box covers will be painted "red" and marked "Fire Alarm."

Neither the Town of Plainville nor any of its agencies will assume any responsibility for the correct operation of any internal fire alarm system.

If for any reason a master box must be disconnected from the Plainville fire alarm system and the owner cannot be reached, nor his/her agent, a detail firefighter will be hired for a fire watch at the owner's expense in accordance with their employee bargaining agreement, at the discretion of the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee.

All additions to the municipal fire alarm system on the outside of the construction area will be at the cost of the owner or contractor. This includes all materials and labor costs for personnel from the Plainville Fire Department and Police Department.

On all buildings with multiple units a flashing strobe light as approved by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee must be provided to indicate that the system has been activated. Location of strobe to be on front of building. One for each unit.
3-18
Any subdivision proposed in the Town of Plainville will be required to install fire alarm street boxes. The location of boxes will be determined by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee. All requirements states in Section 3-1 will apply.
3-19
Any building which has an interior fire alarm system, the owner or contractor, will install a key box next to the entrance or at a location approved by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee.
3-20
The key box will be a size and style approved by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee. Excessive number of keys or "Right to Know" documents might require a key vault.
3-21
The key box or vault shall be a Supra Safe 2 or Supra Safe 2R. They are available to the building owner/owners at their cost after approval by the Chief of the Plainville Fire Department or his designee. Key box/vault are key coded only for the Plainville Fire Department. Order forms are available at the Fire Department.
